A lower GI study or barium enema as it is called, allows the radiologist to see the large bowel. Due to the nature of the study, there is special bowel preparation which is absolutely necessary in order to have a successful study. First purchase the following from your local pharmacy or grocery store:
One (1) 255 gram container of MIRALAX
Four (4) BISACODYL (DULCOLAX) tablets.
Sixty-four (64) ounce GATORADE (avoid red or purple).
Starting the morning BEFORE your exam
8:00 A.M. LIGHT MEAL - includes clear soups (fat free), small portions of skinless chicken or turkey, fish, white bread but no butter, plus clear liquids including strained fruit juices without pulp (apple, lemonade etc. but no red or purple drinks), water, coffee or tea but no milk or non-dairy creamer). You may drink as much as you want that is clear and is NOT red or purple. You may have plain Jello without toppings and Popsicles. DO NOT EAT vegetables, fruits, nuts, fats,butter,milk, cheese,beef,pork,lanb or whole grain breads or cereals.
NOON NO SOLID FOODS OR DAIRY PRODUCTS, CLEAR LIQUIDS ONLY! (Anything you can see through as long as it is not red or purple) Drink as much clear liquid as possible You may drink as much as you want that is clear and is NOT red or purple. You may have plain Jello without toppings and Popsicles. No alcoholic beverages. Be aware that drinking carbonated beverages may increase bloating.
6:00 P.M. Mix the entire container of MIRALAX in 64 ounces of Gatorade. Mix well. Drink 8 to 12 ounces of the MIRALAX-Gatorade mixture every 15 - 20 minutes. Shake the solution well before each glass. IT IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT TO TAKE ALL 64 OUNCES AND BE SURE TO DRINK PLENTY OF CLEAR LIQUIDS TO HELP CLEAN YOUR BOWEL. Some patients do experience nausea and/or vomiting while preparing for this procedure. If this happens, you may need to take a short break from drinking the mixture. We cannot stress enough the importance of consuming all 64 ounces. When you have finished, your bowel movements should be running liquid (may be yellow in color).
7:00 P.M. Take four (4) bisacodyl (Dulcolax) tablets with 8 - 12 onces of clear liquid. (Although the package insert may state not to take more than two (2) tablets at one time, please take all four (4) for this preparation.
YOU MAY DRINK CLEAR LIQUIDS UP UNTIL ONE (1) HOUR BEFORE YOUR EXAM.
